Cory McClenathan
Fast Facts
Cory
McClenathan began his drag racing career at age 16 behind
the wheel of Volkswagen powered vehicles. He won the first
three races he entered. His interest in racing came from
his father, Dick a former drag and off-road racer. From
the time his father introduced him to NHRA drag racing,
the younger McClenathan knew he wanted to be a drag racer.
2007 marks McClenathan’s 17th season driving a Top Fuel
dragster. During his first three seasons as a professional
(1991-93) he campaigned his family-owned Mac Attack Racing
Top Fuel dragster. He raced the following year for Larry
Minor Motorsports before joining Joe Gibbs Racing in 1995.
That relationship endured until Gibbs withdrew from drag
racing after the 2000 season. After sitting out all but
one race in the 2001 season due to lack of sponsorship,
McClenathan joined Henkelman and Baca Motorsports for
2002. In 2003, he was behind the butterfly wheel of Darrell
Gwynn Racing dragster. McClenathan joined Carrier Boyz
Racing in 2004, signing a multi-year contract.
McClenathan has finished second in the POWERade NHRA
championship series four times (’92, ’95, ’97, ’98). He
has finished in the top-10 every season he has raced,
most recently in 2006 he finished 9th. McClenathan earned
his 30th career top-qualifier award in Houston, TX and
earned his 29th career win in Richmond, Va in 2006.
One of the season highlights of 2006 was an uplifting
runner-up finish while driving a special edition JEGS
Mail Order Top Fuel dragster at National Trail Raceway.
This was the first time since 1981 that a yellow and black
JEGS Top Fuel car had competed at National Trail and the
home town crowd loved it.
