Troy Coughlin

Pro football's John Elway, golf's Bobby Jones, baseball's Sandy Koufax -- all great athletes who ended their careers at the pinnacle of their sport.

Dare we add Troy Coughlin Sr. to that list?

Coughlin won the NHRA E3 Spark Plugs Pro Mod Series championship three times in the last six years, including the 2017 title. The veteran driver then decided to retire from professional drag racing.

He leaves behind a stellar resume that includes the 2012, 2015 and 2017 Pro Mod titles and 17 victories, 15 in Pro Mod and two more in Pro Stock.

Now out of the seat, Coughlin will shift most of his focus to JEGS High Performance, the company found by his father, Jeg Coughlin Sr., and now run by he and his three brothers: John, Mike and Jeg. Jr.

Coughlin also will still dabble in drag racing, driving in Super Gas, where he won the 1991 U.S. Nationals. He'll also continue to be a guiding force to son Troy Jr. and daughter Paige, who look to extend the Coughlin family legacy in drag racing.

He certainly has plenty to offer his children, after a career that spanned nearly 30 years and taught him many valuable lessons. He followed in the footsteps of his famed father and became the first of his brothers to turn pro, making his NHRA debut in Pro Stock in 1994.

Coughlin began his winning ways in 1991 driving to the winner's circle in Super Comp at a Division 3 race at Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Ky. He won his first national event later that year with a Super Gas victory at Indianapolis.

Some of his other accomplishments in drag racing include membership in the Holley Six-Second Pro Stock Club and Speed Pro 200-mph Club, a trophy run at the exclusive $50,000 Winston Showdown in 2000, various Sportsman-level wins, and a memorable and profitable weekend at the $50,000 Big Dog Shootout in 2005.

Coughlin also won the NMCA Pro Street title in 2009. And in addition to his Pro Mod titles, he finished second in the standings in that class in 2013, 2014 and 2016.

The affable driver also has been key to the growth of the Pro Mod class in recent years. As part of the Real Pro Mod Association, Coughlin and JEGS are founding supporters of NHRA Pro Mod racing, which has enjoyed drastically increased participation by teams, drivers and sponsors.
