Troy Coughlin

As the popularity of and the participation in NHRA’s Pro Mod class has skyrocketed, one name and one team keeps coming to the forefront of a very crowded and talented field of contenders.

Troy Coughlin Sr. and his instantly recognizable, bright yellow JEGS.com Chevy Corvette C7 have dominated Pro Mod like no other.

Coughlin won the 2015 NHRA Pro Mod championship, marking the second time in four years he was the man holding the big trophy at the end of the season. He also won the championship in 2012. He ended another three seasons (2013, 2014, 2016) in second place in the Pro Mod points standings, trailing the champion by a mere 50 points in the final tally last season.

It is easy to see how it’s become common knowledge that Coughlin, his award-winning crew chief Steve Petty, and the talented JEGS.com team will contend for the trophy at every Pro Mod race.

No driver has a better record than Coughlin over the last five years in the highly competitive class. He won a career-high three events in 2016 (Englishtown, St. Louis, Las Vegas 2). He’s accrued an astonishing nine victories and six runner-up finishes in the only 50 Pro Mod races NHRA has staged.

The second-oldest of JEGS High Performance founder Jeg Sr.'s four sons, Coughlin has also been integral in the overall growth of the class since its inception. As part of the Real Pro Mod Association, Coughlin and JEGS are founding supporters of NHRA Pro Mod racing.

As a younger man, Coughlin paved the way for his family's second generation of drivers by becoming the first of the four Coughlin brothers to turn pro. He made his Pro Stock debut in 1994 and later scored the first of his three wins in the class in 2001.

Coughlin began his winning ways years earlier in 1991 in the sportsman classes when he drove to the winner’s circle in Super Comp at a Division 3 race at Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Ky., and he won his first national event later that year with a Super Gas victory at the prestigious U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis.

Combined with his two Pro Mod championships, his NMCA Pro Street world title in 2009 puts three championship trophies in his ever-expanding trophy case.

Some of his other accomplishments in drag racing include membership in the Holley Six-Second Pro Stock Club and Speed Pro 200-mph Club, a trophy run at the exclusive $50,000 Winston Showdown in 2000, various Sportsman-level wins, and a memorable and profitable weekend at the $50,000 Big Dog Shootout in 2005.

More recently, Coughlin has helped guide the career of his son, Troy Jr., who will make his debut in the Top Fuel class in 2016 in the SealMaster/JEGS.com dragster. He’s also active in the careers of daughters, Meghan and Paige, who will become the latest members of the Coughlin family to tackle the tough Super Comp class this season.
