Troy Coughlin

Even though Troy Coughlin’s 2013 season wasn’t quite as magical as his 2012 campaign, when he won the Pro Mod championship, the veteran JEGS.com driver still had plenty about which to smile.

Coughlin won two races, including the season finale in Las Vegas, and ended up second in the Pro Mod championship standings.

"It didn’t really hit me until June of last year that we won the 2012 title," Coughlin said. "Even when NHRA President Tom Compton hands you the jacket and the ring in Gainesville, and it’s like, ’Wow!’, you still can’t quite get your arms around. It was a couple of weeks later, when finally I said, ’Man, we won the NHRA world championship. That’s pretty cool.’

"Of course we wanted to defend the title in 2013. The first part of the year we either raced all the way to the final or we got beat in the first round. It was up and down like that. Then in the second half of the season we struggled with the car a little bit, but we got back on track with it and won Vegas for the second year in a row, which was pretty cool.

"We made a great run at it, but ended up runner-up in the standings. Close, but no cigar."

The Vegas win was historic for the Coughlin family because it was the 100th NHRA national event victory for them. Troy has seven of those titles, with younger brother Jeg Jr. claiming 72 national event victories. After Troy won in Las Vegas, he dedicated the victory to Jeg by signing the Wally trophy and presenting it to his beaming little brother.

"I thought about it for a long time," Troy said. "We’ve all raced about the same amount of years, and every now and then someone asks, ’Which one of you guys is the better driver?’ I said, ’You’ll have to let the trophies speak for themselves and Jeg’s got a ton of them. The rest of us have a good amount, but he’s got the lion’s share."

Troy and Jeg are just part of the famed Coughlin family, which is led by patriarch Jeg Coughlin Sr. Jeg Sr.’s sons John, Troy, Mike and Jeg Jr. all race, and Troy’s son Troy Jr. picked up the tradition, too. T.J., as he is known, won the Division 3 Super Gas championship in 2013.

It was Troy Sr. who paved the way for the second generation by being the first of the Coughlin brothers to turn pro when he made his Pro Stock debut in 1994. He won his first Pro Stock race in 2001 and earned several more over the years.

Perseverance has been key for Troy Sr. He started his winning ways in 1991 when he drove to victory lane in Super Comp at a Division 3 race at Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Ky., and he won his first national event later that year with a Super Gas victory at the prestigious U.S. Nationals.

The Pro Mod championship is the second of Troy Sr.’s decorated career, as he won the NMCA Pro Street world title in 2009.

Some of his other accomplishments in drag racing include membership in the Holley Six-Second Pro Stock Club and Speed Pro 200-mph Club, a trophy run at the exclusive $50,000 Winston Showdown in 2000, various Sportsman-level wins, and a memorable and profitable weekend at the $50,000 Big Dog Shootout in 2005.
