Mike Coughlin

Mike Coughlin is a multi-time champion during his long career as a drag racer.

Coughlin, who will celebrate his 33rd year in drag racing in 2017, racing in the Top Dragster class and will compete at NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series events on the national and divisional level. He's had several successful seasons racing his JEGS.com Chevrolet in Top Sportsman, including winning a national event in Norwalk, Ohio, in 2014.

Coughlin is one of four sons to JEGS founder Jeg Sr., and he has been a part of the drag racing since he was a small boy growing up in Ohio. Family and drag racing go together for the Coughlins, and Mike's sons Clay and Jack are following in their dad's footsteps, just like he did.

Son Jack has raced in the past and is very good at it and has since shifted his interests to golf, basketball and soccer. In 2016 his school, St Charles Prep, his golf team finished 2nd in the Division 1 state finals. He has also made the school Honor Roll for five straight quarters.

Son Clay is an avid participant in the NHRA Jr Dragster racing league, this year scoring 2 wins and a runner up along with late round finishes to secure a 2nd place finish in the 2016 Jr2 class at National Trail Raceway.

Coughlin already has a pair of Division 3 championships on his résumé, joining his brothers in a title-winning family legacy. The family has won 15 championships and more than 100 major drag races in the past two decades.

For his part, Coughlin won the Division 3 Top Sportsman championship in 2007 and 2009 and finished second in the title race in 2011 and 2012.

His first major win came in Street E.T. at the Fall Classic at National Trail Raceway in 1987, but he has added plenty of victories in the years since. Coughlin won the Pro Stock Truck title in Englishtown, N.J., in 1999, joining his three brothers on a national event winner's podium.

Later that year, he won NHRA's most prestigious and longest-running event, the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, which helped him finish the year as one of the few competitors to qualify for every event.

In 2001, Coughlin won three more Pro Stock Truck races in four final-round appearances during a five-race span to move from 13th place to fourth by season's end. He established records for elapsed time and speed by driving his JEGS Mail Order Chevy S-10 to a 7.379-second run at 182.65 mph in Chicago.

Coughlin capped the season by winning the final Pro Stock Truck event in history at the NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif.

He returned to his Sportsman racing roots in 2002 with a Super Comp entry and remained one of the most consistent drivers in the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, routinely winning races and contending for the national title each year.

By 2006, Coughlin shifted gears to a much-quicker six-second, 200-mph JEGS.com Chevy Cobalt for the newly formed Top Sportsman class. He won the Division 3 championship in the class the next season after dominating in his JEGS Mail Order Chevy Cobalt with three event wins and the largest points total by any competitor in the division, regardless of class.

He followed that up with another steady showing in Division 3 Top Sportsman competition in 2008, winning the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event in Indianapolis and finishing fifth overall despite entering just five events.

Coughlin's passion for another championship pushed him to a second Division 3 Top Sportsman title in 2009, which came on the strength of one national event victory, one divisional trophy, and one divisional runner-up.

In 2014, he and brother Troy doubled up in Norwalk, Ohio, with Troy winning the Pro Mod national event and Coughlin the Top Sportsman class on the same day.

Coughlin and his wife Kriss reside in Delaware, Ohio, with their sons. He serves as a vice president at the family business, JEGS Automotive.
