Clay Coughlin

Clay Coughlin

High schooler Clay Coughlin is making some big moves as he transitions from a successful Junior Dragster career into the ultra-competitive Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series.

Clay's father Mike, a three-time champion in the North Central Division (2007 and 2009 in Top Sportsman and 2019 in Top Dragster), recently took ownership of a specially-built JEGS.com Chevrolet Cobalt he had made specifically for his youngest son. The car will likely run in Super Stock in one of the modified classes and it's going to be fast.

Playing it safe, Mike and a couple of his veteran racing friends will run the Cobalt several times to make sure it's dialed in perfectly before it's handed over to Clay. During that period, Clay will begin racing in some of the other Team JEGS racecars to get used to quicker elapsed times and higher speeds.

All indications are Clay will be a quick study in whatever he drives. When he first started in the Junior Dragster ranks at age 8, he only needed a few races to find the victory circle. He's been a regular winner ever since.

When he's not racing himself, Clay's can usually still be found at the drag strip. During his father's championship-winning 2019 season, Clay became a regular in the pits, learning as much as possible from both his dad and the JEGS crew.
